1. lunchtime at school

Colton wonders if it had been such a good idea to pretend he'd had schooling before he came here. Maybe then the adults wouldn't have thrust him into this place like he knew what to expect. After the first day or two it doesn't feel too complicated, using the locker, finding his classrooms, finding an empty desk he can use, remembering all his books and supplies. But many of the subjects are beyond him. He's grateful Danny taught him to read, otherwise he doesn't think he could keep up at all. The teachers are lenient with him because he's new, but he finds he wants to try. He wants to learn. This is exactly the sort of experience he was never able to have, tied to the clocktower as he was.

It's a good way to observe humans, too, the way they interact with each other here in 2021, the language they use.

Lunchtime was overwhelming the first day. On top of the fact that he can't eat, he also realized everyone had their own groups to sit with already. Colton is outgoing and friendly, but even he has his limits. He can't just join a table of strangers. Now he has lunch down to an art, he simply finds a table no one else is already sitting at and he uses the hour to study or finish homework so he doesn't have to pretend to eat.

Algebra book open in front of him, Colton taps his pen against his notebook while he tries to make sense of a particularly tricky equation.

2. band class voyeuring :0

Colton leaves lunch early, once, and as he's walking down the hallway to get to the stairs he hears music in the distance. It isn't a recording, he doesn't think, it's loud in a way that the television and radio here isn't. Curious, he follows the sound until he discovers which classroom it's coming from. There's a tall window next to the door, and Colton presses his face against it in wonder, gazing in at all the students playing instruments of all sorts.

The music isn't like any he's heard in Enfield, or any he's heard here in Darrow at the Children's Home. It feels so...alive.

"Wow," he whispers, entranced.

3. walking home from school

Colton has noticed that some of the students take a bus to get home, and others, mostly in his grade, use cars. Colton thinks he'd like to learn to drive a car someday, but of course he doesn't have one, and he doesn't even know someone who has one. Instead he walks, the cold winter air feeling like nothing at all to him, bundled up in the coat and hat the Home provided for him anyway so he doesn't stand out.

As he reaches the corner he notices two boys who look his age laughing up at a tree. Wondering what could possibly be funny about a tree, Colton approaches, startling when one throws a stick up into the branches and laughs again. He hears a hiss, and realizes there's a cat up there. He can just make it out, a small orange one.

"Hey," he says in the way so many others his age do, "Leave the cat alone, you could hurt it!"

The boys turn their heads to regard him, but they don't look bothered at all. "Who asked you?" one says.

"No one asked me," Colton says, momentarily bewildered, but still angry. "I'm telling you to leave the cat alone. Why would you want to hurt a little animal?"

The boys laugh again and spit insults, and don't move at all. "What are you going to do about it?" the bigger one asks, smirking.

What is he going to do about it?

"I'll not let you hurt it," Colton says decidedly, moving between them and the tree, looking as stern and intimidating as he can.

"You realize it's two against one?" the bigger one says, moving up uncomfortably close. He shoves Colton, pushing him against the tree trunk.

"You can't hurt me," Colton says, trying to temper his anger, but the boy doesn't listen and punches him. Colton tries to block it, but it takes him by surprise and the force of it sends him to the ground. It doesn't hurt, it only makes him angrier. Not so much that the boys would try to hurt him, but that he doesn't know what to do in a situation like this.

"I said you can't hurt me," Colton growls as he stands, leaving his bag on the ground.

"You're gonna wish you'd stayed down," the boy replies, and practically jumps him, using his knees and fists. Colton can't feel any of it, but he instinctively moves to protect his face. He must throw a punch of his own, it all happens in a blur, but whatever he's done sends the other boy swearing and sprawled on his back, nose bleeding.

"Holy shit," the second says, eyes wide. "C'mon, let's get out of here--"

"I'll make you pay for that," the bigger one says, blood dribbling red down the front of his jacket as he friend pulls him up.

"Just go," Colton says in a low voice, but they're already scrambling away. Colton watches them, trembling a little, not in pain but from what he's done.

4. children's home (for Fraser)

Colton has recently learned of the existence of a magical mailbox that delivers letters anywhere in the world. (Or worlds, if the way this place has been explained to him is to be believed.) He asked a classmate about it, and they seemed awfully amused by something that seemed amazing to Colton, but they confirmed it would send your letter home to the person of your choosing.

And so Colton is currently sitting in the quiet of his dorm room, drafting a letter to Danny to explain what happened to him, where he is, to not worry and please be careful. Having only learned to write a short time ago, his handwriting is frustratingly awful. He makes a sound of annoyance .

"Shit on a toast point," he mutters quietly when his letters don't curve as prettily as he'd like. He looks up in the next moment as his roommate walks in and his expression brightens. "Hello, Fraser. Are you busy?"

((idk why I wrote all that sdklsdlk feel free to find Colton whenever! if you want something different just dm me :) ))
